Dental Emergency

When dental emergencies occur, it is common to see people panic if they don’t know where to go to receive emergency dental treatment. This panic is usually accompanied by quite a bit of pain, so it is understandable when people become flustered. If you are need of emergency dental treatment, you will want to come to Riverside Dental Care. Our dentists are experienced in working on emergency dental problems and will be able to put you at ease.

Who To Contact For Emergency Dental Treatment

If you have a dental problem that requires emergency treatment, please call the office so that we may see you immediately. New patient emergencies are welcomed during office hours. If you have a problem today — we will see you today.

For the convenience of our registered patients, we have a dentist on-call for emergencies. That way, you can be assisted whenever you come into our office. If the emergency arises at a time outside of our regular office hours, please call our office at (435) 673-3363. You will be directed to the person on-call. We will arrange treatment as quickly as possible.

Qualifications For A Dental Emergency

Some people tend to second-guess themselves when it comes to dental emergencies. If you are wondering if you have a dental emergency on your hands, check to see if your situation matches any of our common emergency dental situations.

  • Knocked out a tooth. Always try to locate your knocked out tooth so our dentists can attempt to put it back. When handling the tooth, do not touch the root of your tooth.
  • Cracked, broken or significantly chipped a tooth. Whether due to trauma or decay, a cracked, broken or deeply chipped tooth can be incredibly painful and embarrassing if in a visible location.
  • Your face becomes very swollen with pain radiating from your teeth or jaw. This is a very dangerous situation as a swollen face generally indicated a serious infection, likely from an oral abscess.
  • Bleeding mouth a full day after dental procedure. Depending on the procedure, it is not uncommon to have a bit of bleeding right after the dental procedure. However, you should not still be bleeding a full day later. This may indicate that a blood vessel was damaged.
  • Visible abscess on your gums. While you cannot see a tooth abscess, you can see an abscess when it occurs on your gums. Do not touch the abscess, as you could potentially burst it and spread further infection into the site.

In all these situations, the sooner you come in to see our dentists, the better. When dental emergency situations are not attended to in a timely manner, you can risk serious infection, the loss of your teeth, and potentially death if the infection enters your bloodstream.

What To Do Until You See Our Dentists

When you have a dental emergency on your hands, it is best if you come in to see one of our dentists immediately. Problems like gum abscess, broken, knocked out, or cracked teeth, and facial swelling should be attended to immediately as there can be very serious complications if these issues are not attended to promptly.

If you have an appointment scheduled and just need temporary dental relief until you see one of our dentists, then there are some things you can do as you wait.

  • Temporary filling kit – To protect a painful cavity or loose crown as you wait to see the dentist, you can use a temporary filling kit, which will last you at most 48 hours. They are widely available online, at drugstores, and some grocery stores.
  • Stay hydrated – Dental pain can be debilitating and cause you to not drink enough water. In the case of a swollen face or damaged teeth, it is important to stay hydrated to keep any infection from becoming worse.
  • Place tooth back – When you have knocked out a tooth, you should attempt to place it back into your mouth. Only handle the crown and not the root so you don’t damage the tooth’s nerve.
  • Pain management – Along with taking anti-inflammatory painkillers like Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, aspirin, Aleve, and others like them, you can use ice packs to help soothe your oral pain. Be sure to monitor your intake of painkillers so you do not accidentally overdose.

While you can manage some of your symptoms with the above tips, we do not recommend them for long-term solutions, but only as stop-gap measures until your appointment with our dentists.

At Riverside Dental Care, we take all our patients’ dental care seriously. That is why we offer emergency dental help in addition to our great array of regular dental services. So, if you have a dental emergency or just want to avail yourself of the dental services of the best dentists in Southern Utah, make sure you contact Riverside Dental Care for all your oral health needs.
