5 Amazing Benefits Of Using A Water Flosser

5 Benefits Of Water Flossing

Did you know that studies show that only 30% of adults floss on a daily basis? The number one reason that people give for not flossing is that it is so cumbersome and inconvenient. Even when we know something is good for us, it can still be so challenging to get into good habits of doing it, even if their dentist hygienist reminding them every six months! Many people don’t realize that there are other options available for them in reaching those difficult-to-reach areas between their teeth and around their gums. A water flosser is one great option. This at-home flosser uses a jet of water to remove plaque, food particles, and bacteria from between the teeth and below the gumline. Let’s take a closer look at the many benefits of using a water flosser.

Less Abrasive and Gentler On The Gums Than Floss

When it comes to traditional flossing, technique matters. Wrapping the floss around each side of the tooth and gently gliding floss in an up and down motion is important. Rough flossing and improper technique can lead to the damaging of tissue attachment. It’s possible for floss to cut the gum tissue in areas of aggressive flossing. This is not the case with the water flosser as it uses water to do its work. There is a learning curve to finding the best placement and angles at which to hold the water flosser, but abrasion and cuts are not a problem like it can be with traditional floss.

Offers Deeper Cleaning Than Traditional Floss

The jet of water is able to reach into tissue pockets where bacteria likes to hang out. As the water flows in and out of the pocket, it moves bacteria along with it. Traditional floss may reach 2mm and possibly 3 mm into pockets but the Waterpik has been shown to disrupt more bacteria and clean deeper than traditional floss.

Improves Gum Health

Removing bacteria around our gum tissue is very important in keeping our gums healthy. Not only does the Waterpik remove and disrupt bacteria but it also massages the gum tissue as it works. Massaging of the gingiva helps to bring better circulation to our gum tissue and it may also help stimulate new cell growth. Studies show that majority of those who use the water flossing notice a decrease in inflammation and bleeding when using the water flosser on a daily basis.

Ideal For Braces And Bridges

There is no doubt that flossing around braces and under bridges can be difficult. Cleaning around the extra hardware usually requires additional flossing gadgets to aid traditional floss and even with that it can be very time consuming and still hard to get floss in the proper place. Often it’s so challenging that people will just skip flossing these areas. With a water flosser, these areas can be easily cleaned well and usually within a few seconds.

Decreases Risk Of Decay

It’s all about the bacteria. Bacteria causes decay. If we can keep the bacteria under control, we have a better chance of reducing our risk of decay. The Waterpik removes bacteria well and in many cases it does better than traditional flossing. Brushing twice a day and using the water flosser once a day is a great way to keep your teeth clean and decrease your risk of decay.
The water flosser really puts all our flossing troubles to rest! Its ease of use and its efficiency make it a great option for everyone! If you have questions on water flossing or if you would like to schedule your next appointment please call us or schedule an appointment online.
