6 Tips to Keep Your Dentures Clean and Long-Lasting

July 28, 2021 By Riverside Dental Leave a Comment

Your dentures are in, and you love your new smile and confidence boost! We all know that nothing lasts forever, so how can you be sure to make your dentures long-lasting?

The key to long-lasting dentures is in how you care for them. Taking the time and effort to care for dentures is not a whole lot different than needing to take time and effort in caring for natural teeth.

While your dentures are artificial, they are still susceptible to cracking, staining, and wear over time. Following these six tips will help you get the most out of your dentures, and these tips will also help keep them looking great!

Handle Dentures With Care

Most dentures are made out of acrylic material. It’s impressive what labs can do with acrylic to create a natural-looking smile for those who wear dentures.

No material is foolproof, and acrylic is no exception. Stains can build up and wear to happen with acrylic. It is also possible for the acrylic to chip or crack if dropped or not handled with care. Taking extra care when transporting your dentures is essential so that you can avoid repairs or even replacement costs.

Soak Them Overnight

Just like your natural teeth, dentures can build up tartar, plaque, and stain. This can also lead to them smelling bad.

Soaking them overnight is one way to help alleviate this issue. Soaking them in a denture cleaning helps to keep them clean and smelling fresh.

Your gum tissue will also thank you if you soak your dentures overnight. This allows your gum tissue to breathe, which is very healthy for your tissue.

Rinse Mouth After Every Meal

Food debris is a common concern with wearing dentures. Food may stick to the denture or under the denture. This can be embarrassing and also annoying. A quick 10-second swish can help eliminate this concern for you.

Dentures can also dry out if you tend to have a dry mouth. You might find that swishing a little water throughout the day helps keep you more comfortable by remoisturizing your mouth.

Brush And Scrub Daily

Dentures don’t decay, but they do still require daily brushing.

Just like natural teeth, dentures are exposed to food and drinks that can stain. And they are also exposed to plaque daily that can even harden into tartar.

Brushing should be done with a denture brush, water, and applying light pressure. Regular toothpaste should not be used on dentures as it is abrasive and can scratch the acrylic surface.

Have Your Dental Office Clean Them

You should be seeing your dentist twice a year for routine exams and cleaning appointments. When you visit, be sure to mention that you would like your dentures cleaned. Your dental office would be happy to soak your denture in a solution that can help remove any stubborn stains or tartar buildup that your toothbrush isn’t removing.

Use Denture Products

There are many products available today that can help keep your dentures fresh and clean. These products are specially formulated to work with acrylic material without causing any damage to it.

Check for these denture kinds of toothpaste and cleanser tablets the next time you’re at your local grocery store or health and beauty store.

  • Polident Dentu-Creme
  • Fresh n’ Brite Denture Cleaning Paste
  • Efferdent Denture Cleanser Tablets

There’s no doubt that your dentures were an investment! We know that properly caring for your dentures is the most critical step in getting the most extended life out of them. Taking just a few minutes a day to care for your dentures and using the best products specifically made for them will keep your smile looking great for the years to come! The chances are that you want your denture smile to last!.
